Scalability? Sure, that's easy. Take your Blog for example. I suspect it has not made you rich. The tricky bit is finding a scalable activity that people will pay good money for.

I had this problem for ages on vista, but in the end I just stopped the hibernate and the problem has gone away.

To do this, go to control panel / performance and tools. On the left hand side there's a 'tasks' list. Press 'adjust power settings' , where you will find one of 'Balanced Power/Power saver/High performance' selected. Which ever one you have selected, press the 'change plan settings' link and change the 'put the computer to sleep' option to never.

Job done !!!

I have had this problem for more than a year and have tried all the pèossible fixes found on the web, including microsoft patches, magic swear words and god knows what. Eventually, I stumble on the sollution by chance. This may not work all the time, but in my case (Windows XP, SP3) it did the trick:

1-right click on my computer
2-go to the hardware tab
3-click on device manager
4-Go into Universal Serial Bus Controler (by the bottom)
5-expand it into a list
this list should be littered (that was my case) with USB-something, often some left overs of badly installed USB devices.

6-remove them all, one by one, don't worry, they will re-install automatically when the dvice is reconnected (no need for the installation CD)

Normally your computer should then resume from hibernation.

Hope this tip saves as much time as I have lost,

I supposed philosophy is nothing more than taking another direction which is less traveled by mankind. A philosopher is thus someone who took a reverse path when knowingly he or she can never able to achieve with the path ahead and where most successful person ever took! Therefore the saying...."if we are down and out, we tend to be more philosophical in life".

What is philosophy? The word tells its meaning by itself. Philos means friend, sophy means wisdom. So whoever try to understand the meaning of the things, of the life, of the universe is a philosopher. Philosophy means thinking for understand the ultimate nature of the phenomena. To try to understand the difference from how the things appear to us and how they really are, their true nature.
The book I have recently written may help in this direction. I want to draw it to your attention, as you may be interested in it. The title is “Travels of the Mind” and it is available at http://www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/TravelsOfTheMind.html
If you have any questions, I am most willing to offer my views on this topic.

It's true that there isn't a "Mensa Invitational," but there is indeed a weekly humor/wordplay contest in The Washington Post called The Style Invitational. And a contest from 1998 is the source of most of the words on the list above (but not, for example, "caterpallor" or "decafalon," which -- think about it -- are not one-letter changes from caterpillar or decathlon).

Much better to see the real thing -- every week at www.washingtonpost.com/styleinvitational . The Style Invitational is a weekly contest with unbelievably clever humor contributed by thousands of readers. It's published every Saturday in The Post's Style (features) section, and online every Friday afternoon at about 3:30 Eastern time.

This week's results (Jan. 23, 2010) were for a contest to write your own homonym or homophone -- a new word that is pronounced just like an existing word -- and define it.

Some of this week's winners (from Week 849, Jan. 23, 2010):

Ho-maid: The role of a traditional wife. (Judy Blanchard, Novi, Mich.)

Hi-deaf TV: Commercials. (Steve Offutt, Arlington, Va.)

S-Cargo: Snail Mail. (Don Hauptman, New York)

See dozens of others just like these at washingtonpost.com/style invitational (click on Week 853). I hope you become regular readers and perhaps even regular contestants. Just follow the direction for each week’s new contest.

The 'fix' you found relating to Linux is because it uses it's swap partition to save the contents of RAM when it hibernates. Windoz has a page file for when it's eaten all your RAM and a hiber file for when it hibernates. It's more than likely a bug M$ introduced.

Your post is interesting but in my view very heuristic and thus may not be an objective description of the nature of time. In physics, formulation of dynamics (whether classical or quantum) in terms of the energy Hamiltonian is very illluminating as it establishes certain fundamental relationships called canonical conjugate pairs e.g. Energy-time and Momentum-space.

Concentrating on the first conjugate pair (because we are interested in time) shows that Energy and time are intrinsically connected. In otherwords, the existence of energy creates time and time must exist for energy to exist. This also tells us in no uncertain terms that time is a physical quantity which has a meaning only in a physical universe (because of its connection with energy).

Time is not a metaphysical or philosophical quantity. It is generated in a physical universe in which energy exists and energy drives the system through changes through another physical property called time.

Time may be just the presence of motion and forces. Time could be due to expansion of space. Time is slow where expansion of space is slow like around large masses. If total motion and forces within a mass is a constant then as the linear motion is increased the internal motion as well forces within that object slow which is then percieved as slowing of time. If we think of two objects in orbit around each other and imagine time slowing down then we should observe motion slow down as well as forces get weaker. Forces are part of time. Forces determine the arrow of time. Without forces time will be perfectly symetrical and lack any direction.

Every now and then I hear about some free talk given by some holy person from India, and as a seeker I always go to check it out. There is some kirtan and meditation and then the same canned speach about how we are all looking for happiness outside of ourselves but it can only be found within us. All good stuff, mind you, but then there is some mention of initiation or shaktipat which is to take place a few days later, for those interested. We are told all about it and about some of the preparations which need to be made. But no one says anything about a fee. It isn't until later that I look at the written instructions given to me that I find the part about a "required donation" usually somewhere between $150 to $300. Now maybe I'm crazy, but how is that a donation if it is required? And what do they do with all that money? If only 10 people are initiated, thats $1,500 to $3,000. And that's apart from all the book sales, CDs and malas and other non-required donations. And that's just in one city. After all, these teachers are touring the whole country in order to "help people". Okay, so maybe it all goes to those charities which they claim to have created. But if they're into charity then why is it that when someone like me, who is poor and cannot afford their "required donation", is turned away when I tell them about my financial situation? They never seem willing to make an exception. I know that if I were rich I would probably just hand the money over, no question. But since I am forced to question, I think that it wouldn't be worth my money. I think that in future, should I be blessed with great wealth, I will still claim poverty when dealing with travelling gurus, just to weed out the true ones from the fakes... assuming there are any true ones these days.
