Yes, you are right. If the French did not exist they would probably need to be invented. Otherwise it would be a sophisticationless world. ( No, don't run to the Little Oxford Dictionary; it is not there ). Coming back to what I was saying, you have hit the must of Cartier on the head. Look at the fine collection of horses that the French have presented to the world. There is no finer horse than the French horse of combat. No, no, say my French friends modestly, eet ees a leetle bit outside what you say combat but I wave aside their confused modesty and press my sophisitcated understanding home so that nothing is lost in the translation. A hors du combat is a hors du combat. Examples are legion. I have expressed to my French friends my admiration for the French working horse. The ones that strut about on their grand roads when they take out their grand processions. No, no say my French friends and I have often wondered why the air of desperation, eet ees a leetle bit outside the subject but I quell the desperation with my newly acquired knowledge of French sophistication. A hors of oeuvre is a hors of oeuvre. The English may have their bee in their spelling contests but the French have their bee in their sophisticated bonnets.
